Lesson 115 Essay

I learned about three inventions and one inventor. The inventions are the mercury barometer, vacuum pump, and the pendulum clock. The inventor’s name is Robert Boyle. First, I learned about the mercury barometer. Barometers measure atmospheric pressure and have a tube and dish full of mercury, a dense liquid metal. A strange glow in the barometer’s tube prompted the study of electricity. Second, I learned about the vacuum pump. A vacuum is generally an area of lower pressure than atmospheric. The vacuum pump inspired Boyle who became the father of chemistry. Third, I learned about the pendulum clock. The pendulum clock releases one gear tooth per swing. It became the universal time keeping standard. Last, I learned about Robert Boyle. Robert was born in 1627 and studied Galileo’s work. He became a member of the invisible college to conduct scientific investigation. He believed science as a way to glorify God. He moved chemistry away from alchemy.
