Lesson 135 Observation

American Red Squirrels

American Red Squirrels are about 12 inches long. They have grayish, red, or rusted colored fur with a white belly. In the summer, sometimes they have black stripes on the sides. They can be found in the forests of Alaska, the east coast north of Georgia, and the rocky mountains. They have white around their eyes. They have long bodies and have some very thick hair.

The American Red Squirrel is sedentary, solitary, and defends territory. During breeding season males wander from their territories to find a female. Females allow their trespass on her territory. They bark, chatter, scream, and purr to communicate with one another. They also use body language to communicate such as stopping their feet or moving their tails. They really like to chew on things, such as wood.

Some American Red Squirrels like to eat seeds. Others like to eat nuts including beechnuts, acorns, as well as fruit. They are predators to Songbirds. They eat their eggs and young birds when they get a chance. They also eat berries. The best food for a Red Squirrel are sunflower seeds, hazelnuts in their shell, and unsalted peanuts. And they really like pine cones.

Females usually breed when they are a year old. Red squirrels are territorial but males must temporarily leave to find a reproductive female and return after mating. Red Squirrels do not lay eggs. The mother builds a nest made of sticks and leaves on a crook tree to give birth. A month after mating a mother can give birth to 3-7 babies.

American Red Squirrels depend on food, insects, small animals, and even young snakes. They depend on a lot of food for the winter. They depend on the rain. They depend on safe habitats. They also depend on fungi, seeds, and nuts. They also depend on each other. They sometimes depend on humans.

Lesson 135: Expository Essay

How To Make A Pizza

There are four main ingredients you need to make a pizza. You need the dough, sauce, cheese, and toppings. First, you need the dough. To make it, you need flour, yeast, sugar, salt, garlic powder, and olive oil. Then you roll out the dough. Second, you need the sauce. To make it you need tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, oregano, Italian seasoning, pepper, onion powder, and garlic salt. Evenly spread the sauce on top of the dough. Third, you need cheese. Sprinkle the cheese over the sauced dough. Last, you need the toppings. You can put any topping such as pepperoni, bell peppers, olives, and ham just to name a few. This is how you make a perfect pizza.

Lesson 135 Essay

I learned about three inventions and one inventor. The inventions are the flying shuttle, the marine chronometer, and the leyden jar. The inventor’s name is Anders Celsuis. First, I learned about the flying shuttle. The flying shuttle unleashed fabric production capability and sped up fabric production. John Kay invented the flying shuttle. He went into the textile business for himself. Second, I learned about the marine chronometer. The marine chronometer is immune to temperature pressure. John Arnold built the flying shuttle. Without the chronometer there would be no British empire. Third, I learned about Anders Celsuis. He was born in 1701. He participated in the expeditions to determine the Earth’s shape. His temperature scale became the world’s standard in the 1950s. Last, I learned about the leyden jar. The leyden jar is a battery that stores charge. The leyden jar was the main source of electricity before generators.

Lesson 128

Tasmanian Devil Observation

When a Tasmanian devil is in a battle, its ears turn red. Its size is 23-26 inches and 0.6-0.7m. It weighs 13-18 lbs and 6-8 kg. They are in the mammalian class. They mostly eat plants. They live in the forests of Tasmania. They are in the Dasyuridae family. They are of Dasyuromorphia order.

Lesson 127

Wombat Observation

Wombats can run 25 mph and 40 km. They have long claws and sharp teeth. They are in the mammalian class. They weigh 33-88 lbs and 15-40 kg. They eat plants, grasses, and some root vegetables. They live in the savannas and forests of Australia, Tasmania, and Flanders Island. They are in the Diprotodontia order. They are in the Vombatidae family. The common wombat is the hairy-nosed wombat.

Lesson 130 Essay

I learned about three inventions and one inventor. The inventions are the coke-fired blast furnace, the Newcomen steam engine, and the octant. The inventor’s name is Thomas Newcomen. First, I learned about the coke-fired blast furnace. Darby invented the coke-fired Blast furnace and figured out how to make iron thinner. The coke-fired blast furnace iron was used to build the first iron arch bridge. Second, I learned about the Newcomen steam engine. It performs mechanical work and uses the vacuum to power the pump. It was used to power other tools and machinery. Third, I learned about Thomas Newcomen. Newcomen was born in Dartmouth in 1663 and he became an iron monger. Newcomen invented the Newcomen steam engine and was his greatest achievement. Lastly, I learned the octant. It measures distances between celestial objects. The octant is mostly used by sailors.

Lesson 130

My Favorite Season

My favorite season is summer. The first reason is because it is hot, and I like hot! The second reason is because you can have popsicles or ice cream. The last reason is the best of all, there is no school!!!

Lesson 125 Essay

I learned about three inventions and one inventor. The inventions are the piano, the thermometer, and the seismometer. The inventor’s name is Gottfried Leibniz. First, I learned about Gottfried Leibniz. The Leibniz wheel was crucial for mechanical calculators. He invented calculus and was a practical inventor and engineer. His progress with the mechanical calculator kept the field alive. Second, I learned about the piano. The piano is used for teaching music education. Playing the piano became a family event and its popularity fell in the 1900s. Third, I learned about the thermometer. Thermometers measure temperature. Thermometers are used in medicine to save lives and devise cures. Last, I learned about the seismometer. Seismometers measure earthquakes. The seismometer needs a scale to complete its measurements.

Lesson 120 Essay

I learned about one invention and three inventors. The invention is called calculus. The two inventors are Christiaan Huygens, Anton Van Leeuwhoek, and Isaac Newton. First, I learned about Christiaan Huygens. He discovered Saturn’s rings in 1655 and invented the pendulum clock in 1656. He also discovered the mathematical formula for centripetal force. Second, I learned about calculus. Calculus is the mathematical study of change. It explains music and motion and can be used in calculators and computers. Third, I learned about Anton Van Leeuwhoek. He is known for microscopic discoveries and he made his own microscopes. Google recognized his 384th birthday in front of millions of people on October 24, 2016. Last, I learned about Isaac Newton. He studied natural philosophy in college in 1665. Newton’s work revolutionized science and helped us put men on the moon. He discovered laws of motion, gravity, and also classical mechanics from motion.

Lesson 115 Essay

I learned about three inventions and one inventor. The inventions are the mercury barometer, vacuum pump, and the pendulum clock. The inventor’s name is Robert Boyle. First, I learned about the mercury barometer. Barometers measure atmospheric pressure and have a tube and dish full of mercury, a dense liquid metal. A strange glow in the barometer’s tube prompted the study of electricity. Second, I learned about the vacuum pump. A vacuum is generally an area of lower pressure than atmospheric. The vacuum pump inspired Boyle who became the father of chemistry. Third, I learned about the pendulum clock. The pendulum clock releases one gear tooth per swing. It became the universal time keeping standard. Last, I learned about Robert Boyle. Robert was born in 1627 and studied Galileo’s work. He became a member of the invisible college to conduct scientific investigation. He believed science as a way to glorify God. He moved chemistry away from alchemy.
